Well you already got your answer but try not to keep the diet to complete guppies, get some freeze dried krill and rip them to little pieces, make the pieces as big as their mouth and let them float they will smell them and get them. Also try giving them some nutritional carnivore pellets. Such as hikari brand ones.

I also give mine cichlid gold pellets (make them smaller then their mouth because their hard to swallow)

It's not a huge risk really, but it's by far best to buy the guppies and keep them in quarantine for at least 2 weeks before feeding them to your bichir. That way, if they are sick it will most likely show up.

Of course, using a tank to breed your own in another solution as well as trying to work a deal with a local breeder to buy his or her deformed culls to use as food. Doesn't really matter what they breed as long as you get them fairly small. I would be glad to sell my guppy and betta culls for a penny each as feeders, especially if I didn't have a few pike cichlids in a 70 gallon to feed them to.

Just make sure you get the guppies from somewhere that is reputable. I would buy a 5 or 10 gallon tank and breed your own. It will be cheaper in the long run, and you know that the fish are not diseased.

When using feeder fish, there is always a chance that they can carry parasites. A safer thing is to use frozen food like bloodworms or frozen or live brineshrimp. If you want to try feeders, you are always taking a risk.

It is likely that they have disease because they are usually kept in bad conditions but it should be fine if they are quarantined and bred few times. Buy the nonfeeders and breed them, they are more healthy and nutritious.
