How did you learn how to swim?

Question

A person can't learn how to swim successfully without knowing what it takes to swim. Of course, one of the ways to teach someone to swim is just to throw them in the water. Just enough people drown every year to make us suspicious of this procedure.

So, what procedure did you use? Did you jump in, were you thrown in, or did someone teach you how?

I was thrown into the deep end of the pool when I was 2 with a life jacket on....that was my first swimming experience

Red Cross swimming lessons when I was a kid. They were either free or very cheap. I wouldn't recommend throwing someone in the water to teach them to swim.

First my mom read me ever drowning article written in our local newspaper daily for three weeks. Then she signed me up for a Y.M.C.A. swimming class. They had their work cut out for them. When we had to jump from the high board, I froze. The instructor tried to threaten me by saying, "Do I have to push you?" to which I said yes. So he did.
