The cities of Mesopotamia along with Egypt are the oldest civilizations in the world. History begins here. This is where writing starts. Most likely to record events and inventory. This is where agriculture begins. The earliest towns were here in the Fertile Cresent. Probably to serve as market places. The first trade routes. The basis of our Judeo-Christian concepts begins here. For instance the Biblical story of "Noah and the Flood" has its origins in the "Tale of Gilgamesh". mesopotamia was an extremely well developed region compared to other areas of the world and the other societies with which it coexisted. it had a system of trade, a well developed religion, well developed technology, the first written language on earth, etc.

ever hear something like "rivers carry civilizations"? well, mesopatamia was a river valley civilization and was very culturally advanced for its time. Other civilization gained knowledge from it as well.
