You need to solve for "a"

8=(12-a)-2, the original problem

10=(12-a), the result of getting rid of the 2 by adding it to both sides

10=12-a, the result of eliminating the parentheses, because they are all the way around an entire side of the equation

-2=-a, the result of getting rid of the 12 by subtracting it from both sides- make sure to keep the a negative

2=a, the result of multiplying both sides by negative 1 (-1)

a=2
