How to make me project look cleaner?

I've been making stuff in Photoshop and Paintshop Pro
for awhile now but everytime i'm done, the product
doesn't look that clean. Can anyone give me some pointers on how to make it look cleaner?

You can add shadows and outlines (only 1 or two pixels deep) and they will look much better.

Make sure you're using the highest color depth possible.
