At most hospitals you still have to.
Have you ever wondered why you are not allowed to use your cell phone in an emergency room of a hospital?

The hospital staff always shakes a finger at you and says something about how cell phones interfere with sensitive instruments. They never say which instruments, or how exactly the interference happens.
Cell phones do interfere with a whole list of electronic devices: car radios, televisions, land line telephones, airline communications equipment and even wireless Internet signals.
The FCC warns that cell phones interfere with medical gadgets, so hospitals err on the side of safety, but four years of testing done by the Mayo Clinic” has shown that cell phone signals actually don’t really interfere much at all with hospital equipment, primarily because of technological improvements in cell phones and hospital equipment. In fact, the two-way radios used by emergency personal interfere a great deal more than cell phones do, but never to the point that a patient has been affected.

ITs because the signals can interact with some of the machinery. It is a great idea to turn them off so it doesn't mess with the important and vital items in the certain areas You know when you get next to a computer and your phone sets off signals, some of the instruments in the hospital do the same thing and can mess up the programs being ran. This can cause major delays in the machine which can lead to a misreading and a misdiagnosis!

Yes,you do have to turn off your cell in a hospital because the signal from your cell could interfere with some of the equipment that the hospital has to use, such as the defibrilator, heart monitor machine or a pacemaker that has implanted inside of a patient's chest.

Most have rules requiring it. Some don't, so if you don't mind being a jerk, you're welcome in those.
Hospitals are just one of a long list of places you shouldn't have your cell phone. It's the equivalent of wearing a watch to a formal dinner party. The people you're visiting deserve to feel you've made them a priority, and others nearby do not need the distraction.

Most places don't make you now. If there isn't a sign at the doors then you probably don't have to.
