knives down so you don't commit suicide just emptying the bin- same with forks, spoons up so they don't hold water and stain. sharp knives - big ones- go in top rack lying on their sides. I used to be really anal about it and put all spoons in one section knives in another etc but found that caused nesting and it was better to mix it up. I love the dishwasher!

I worked in Dietary in a Nursing Home for years. State requires the silverware be faced down when washing in the dishwasher. I also do that at home

I always put mine up because I feel they get sprayed more without the basket interferring. I have heard that it depends on the make/model of your dishwasher. Some dishwashers recommend top down, while others recommend top up. Do you still have your dishwasher manual to see what they recommend?

I alternate my silverware except knives that way the spoons don't "stick" together and it gives me extra room in my bin... That would solve your problem everybody wins.... I wish that was the only argument I ever had with my mother... !! Good luck and be well.

i don't think it really matters... but I face mine up so I can see what I am pulling out to place in the drawer when I go to put it up!
