Iron maiden was treated unfairly on the radio and few times were they heard on it.They still managed to sell over 50 million albums,...50 million.Metallica is great in its own right and suffered similiary early in their career,their musicianship is very good for a hard/thrash metal band but over shadowed by the vocal range of bruce dickenson and the guitars and bass of Iron Maiden,I give the drum nod to Lars Ulrich of Metallica though.
All in all Iron Maiden is better,Metallica sounds good today because most of pop music today is schlock but when Metallica first came out everyone I knew thought they were terrible and very limited compared to better bands of the time.But you asked a good question (star for you)

That is like saying Zeppelin or Sabbath? It is a tough call... Metallica is a monster of a band... but I think that Iron Maiden is a more musically talented band. I mean Bruce has one of the legendary voices in Metal, James just kind of does what he does and you either like it or you don't. I have to go with.............. Metallica! Maiden's album art and lyrical content get cheesier as I get older. Metallica writes from a pretty dark place most of the time but their themes are really about the struggle of life... If the kids don't follow up St. Anger with something that I actually purchase and keep I might have to come back and change my answer! Good Question.

standard i could say Maiden. they have been greater consistent via the years with very few hick-ups. I would have to go with Iron Maiden. Maiden was and still is way more consistent with type of music that put out. Besides they have a friggin zombie (Eddie) as a mascot! What does Metallica have? J*zz on an album cover? (Load/Reload anyone?)

I like metallica more, but iron maiden is better. they have a lot better guitar and vocals. I love both bands, though =)
