Assassination is the murder of an elected official or an unelected head of state. Otherwise it is murder. The term comes from the Arabic word "hashisheen".

Generally, an elected official can be assassinated, while anyone else, no matter how famous, can be murdered.

i agree with michael J...i don't think that the person needs to be an elected official necessarily...look at Martin Luther King Jr....he was assassinated...

The best description that I've heard is if the killer has an ideological motive, it's an assassination.

anyone with power and tons of money can be assasinated, people that can be a threat to someone's business or security... not only the government people, also ordinary ones..

insecurity, greediness and jealousy contributes to that..

I don't think you have to be important to have your assasination considered an assasination.

although most people you hear about being assasinated are presidents and other important people.
