Initially I go to the negative. But I have myself trained to realize that it is just fear (a negative expectation of the future). I identify which fear I'm dealing with and then move to hope (a positive expectation of the future).

I am retired after 35 years in Information Systems. As a project leader, I found a mix of both was absolutely required.
We need to be a little naive and innocent to imagine what is possible and commit to new ideas. We need to be somewhat cynical and critical to seek and destroy obstacles that could be our undoing.
Keeping a split personality that is both optimistic and pessimistic is not even possible for most people. But, it is an argument for working in teams on complex problems. It can also be an explanation of why marriage works well for so many people.

I seek the truth in all things for that is where the beauty can be found. Even in death can new life be found. In pain and suffering strength must come. From grief resolution will follow. For every thing there is a season. though human reasoning can be complicated with so many combinations of motives and emotions we must keep in mind that most everyone does what they think is the right thing to do. Some times the toughest thing in life is to understand from there point of view.

I asess the damage,then immediately begin to try to see if there is anything good to come from a worst case scenario and often,if it's not immediatly apparent,it usually turns out there is.Becuase to believe that no good can come form a bad situation is to give up hope.

I try to see the whole. Without labels or judgment. Then the parts fall into their place. It's key to drawing and painting, and it works in everything.
