So what was your question? Anyway, I also got a Acer Aspire E560 core 2 with 250Gb harddisk times 2, and with 2 gb ram. Indeed, it is too much for me but since I already bought it, I have to accept it. Currently I am trying to think of ways to make good use of so much space. if you just want a simple PC, then, any Pentium 4 PC will do. I deeply regret drumping my Pentium 2 PC which uses window 98 only. It is more than enough for me actually. I dump it as my monitor spoiled and I was so upset that I did not think properly and bought a new PC set. So, if you just a simple PC, beside setting up yourself with the parts, get one from Acer or Dell. A good one like you mention should not cost more than $1k. (Singapore dollar). Good Luck.

Go to Geeks.com and check out the various types of computers.

Something in the range of $400 - 500 (US), including LCD monitor, is what you are looking for. I'm assuming you are talking about a desktop.

If you buy a new computer now, you would expect it to handle possible improvements in programming and hardware over the next three to four years.

It would actually be much better if you get two HDD of say 100 GB each and set them up as RAID 1. That way, if something goes wrong (data, OS, drivers) with one, the other will repair it. Between 512 MB and 1 GB would be acceptable. CPU speed somewhere about 2.5 GHz, with FSB (front side bus) speed about 400 KHz. Separate video and sound cards not necessary AT THIS TIME (they can be added later if you need them). The motherboard has these built in.

I know you said nothing fancy but you need to keep in mind that you don't want to spend money on something that is already obsolete. Buy something mid-range.
