Islandization is the creation of "islands" of habitat created by deforestation or development.
It creates "micro ecosystems" similar to islands because the plant and wildlife cannot disperse widely and therefore develop in isolation, creating subspecies similar to the situation in the Galapagos, where each island has it's own distinct forms of wildlife even though they were all descended from common ancestry.

These islands can be formed by deforestation if the trees are removed in such a way that the larger forest is broken into smaller fragments of forest that are separated from each other.
