Its called a protractor....and you know I think I skipped math class the day they explained what that was for, so thanks for that little bit of information.

because Earth is a sphere (well not quite a perfect sphere, but close enough). And a sphere is a series of circles. Circles are measured in degrees of arc. Degrees allow any point on earth to be located by its two coordinates (lat. and long.) It is extremely awkward if not impossible to do that with miles of kilometers.
