There is a way in which this item could be used for the good of communities and the welfare of the society --- BUT, this "way" would be BY way of the people wielding it having some operating sense of moral fiber and the wisdom to use it wisely !!
Suffice to say, that those days have LONG gone !! It is a tool that is used NOW by the powerful and the wealthy to get what they want FROM people !! And, it is being used more and more to see the "insiders" within a community to the "devolopment" that benefits THEM as opposed to the good of the people !!!
It is extremely scary to think that at any moment -- on the whim of some committee -- you could be placed on the streets from your family's homestead and given some paltry "decision" sum to leave !! BUT, it is happening all over the country as we speak and the recent use of this piledriver has sent whole sections of some cities clamoring for a new place to hang their hats to make room for yet MORE shopping malls and parking lots !!!!!!!!!

I think that eminent domain is just another example that you can never truly own anything including land.
If you don't pay the taxes, the government takes it. With eminent domain, if the government wants it, they take it even if you did pay your taxes.
It is just another example of how the United States is no longer a republic functioning as it was originally designed to.

There is a time and place for it. My community practiced eminent domain to better the community. They tore down a lot of shabby houses and businesses and replaced them with other businesses to make the city more economically appealing. I don't feel that city governments don't use this unless they have to, but it can be good for a community to thrive.

It's very expensive in my opinion. As in: bunch of working farmers having to save for a lawyer to fight from putting power line poles (giant concrete and metal, mini Eiffel tower things) across the middle of planted fields.
These same power lines could easily go a better and more accessible route. Big shout out for Ameren and Dynegy. Ameren has been in news a lot for price gouging BTW.
Dating from the 70's through now some government butt face has been eyeballing my property and drawing a highway THROUGH my house in crayon on his map. Kind of presumptuous to make plans with MY PROPERTY, no? There are more direct and accessible routes already in use that could easily be widened.
Eminent Domain is another way to say "I just ran for office and now that land I prospected on and the empty store my cousin owns are about to pay off big time".

Unconstitutional. The Government does *not* have the right to seize property from law-abiding citizens. The Government has the right to seize property that was used for the commission of crimes, if I remember correctly, but not the authority to take property away from the general citizens.
I'm talking about eminent domain in the USA, btw.

it's not right. your land shouldn't be swiped out from under you, just because the government wants it. if you own it then it's yours, what happened to this being a free country. if a person wants to sell then they will. if not then tough luck, go look else where, some people love where they live and are happiest there than anywhere else in the world, why should that be taken away from them. some people have land that has been in their families for generations. it should be illegal to b allowed to take it from them.

It should be illegal, plain and simple if the government wants to buy the land they should have to pay what the owner wants just like everyone else.
