how are some ways to cheer her up. and if not how muc time alone should i give her ?

You need to ask her what she wants. Tell her you know she is sad and if she wants to talk to you that you are available anytime to listen. If she wants some time alone, she will tell you that too. Remember that although it may seem uncomfortable at first, the best thing to do is not be afraid to talk about her grandfather to her. Sometimes people think when someone dies it is best to never mention that person again, but the truth is talking about and sharing memories about the deceased is part of the healing process. It sounds like you are a sensitive person and will do best for your friend.

Give her a sympathy card----also ask her if she wants/needs you to go to the funeral (or memorial) service with her?
