I have the feeling they were eggs; my male betta seemed to really take an interest in them. He began to make a bubble nest and was showing off for my female.

They probably were eggs. I gather that your male and female are either in separate containers, or a single container with a divider?

Unless the male and female were in the same tank, the eggs wouldn't have been fertilized, so you won't get any fry. If not removed, the female will either eat them, or they develop a fungus. (and it is okay to remove them)

If you want to try and breed your bettas, I would wait another 3-4 weeks before trying again. This will give you time to read about how to do this, and condition the male and female so that they're both ready at the same time. The male should already have the bubble nest built, so he can place the eggs in it when they're laid. Yes that would be eggs and if the male has already shown interest in them it would not be wise to remove them or the male will stop eating and eventually die.
