Some ticks transmit bacteria that cause illnesses such as Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Your risk of contracting one of these diseases depends on what part of the United States you live in, how much time you spend in wooded areas and how well you protect yourself.

If you've received a tick bite:

Remove the tick promptly and carefully. Use tweezers to grasp the tick near its head or mouth and pull gently to remove the whole tick without crushing it.
If possible, seal the tick in a jar and keep it for a week or two. Your doctor may want to see the tick if you develop symptoms of illness after a tick bite.
Use soap and water to wash your hands and the area around the tick bite after handling the tick.
Call your doctor if you aren't able to completely remove the tick.

A "normal" reaction to a mosquito bite can vary. Some people will have only a small area of redness, swelling and itching that typically goes away within 24 hours. Others may have a larger area of itching - sometimes the size of a grapefruit in highly sensitive individuals - that can last for several days.

In some cases, hypersensitivity to mosquito bites may be associated with an underlying medical condition, such as chronic lymphocytic lymphoma or certain viral infections, such as Epstein-Barr virus. However, this is uncommon.

Rarely, an individual may have a serious reaction to mosquito bites, which results in swelling in the throat, hives and wheezing. This life-threatening condition (anaphylaxis) requires immediate medical attention.

If you're sensitive to mosquito bites, the best advice is to avoid getting bitten. Follow these common-sense precautions:

Avoid areas, such as marshes, where mosquito activity is highest.
Avoid going outside when mosquitoes are most active, such as at dusk and dawn and after rain.
Wear protective clothing when outside.
Use insect repellent.
To relieve the itching of a bite, apply a lotion containing calamine. If you have a large local reaction, consider taking an over-the-counter antihistamine, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) to see if it helps. Consult your doctor if you're concerned about the severity of your reaction.

A good home remedy to repel mosquito's and ticks is to wipe yourself down with (or carry in your shirt pocket or on your belt) snuggles or bounce dryer sheets. The smell of them irritates many insects and also will make you smell fresh and clean.
A pretty good all natural product that can be used to sooth insect bites is Apinol.

Try applying a small amount of Aloe Vera Gel to the affected area. It's all natural, inexpensive and easy to use. It's also effective on dog bites, acne, athlete's foot, blisters, burns, scratches, cuts, scalp itches, dry skin, and God-knows-what-else.

Tea Tree oil is really good for most insect bites, including fire ants. If you put it on a fire ant bite immediately (within seconds) you will have no burning and no red boil.

Lavender is another essential oil that could help.

Good luck and be well.
