Each individual, key word-individual, determines what they want from their existence in this Life. Competition is one of the factors that determine the future of ones' Life. Many choose to ignore competition, while others thrive in that world. Next: what is "getting ahead>" There are so many answers just as there are so many individuals. In my life, for a period, competition was a necessity of furthering my existence, thus meeting my expectations as to who I was. However, I, like many before me, learned that "getting ahead" was not as important at an advancing age as it appeared to be at an earlier age.
If we do in life what we believe we should be doing, then NO it is not difficult to "get ahead." But, should we choose a course that is a "struggle" then prepare for difficulty in the life of competition.
Work hard, live well and find some peace in life that will lead to the meaning of your existence.

in a few areas, such as spiritually, there is no need to compete
in many areas, you only need to compete with yourself, try to do better then you did before
in some areas, often at the workplace, you still need to focus on being the best you can be, developing the whole package you have to offer, but still there is sometimes need to compete, to be aware of what is needed and to stand out and provide it better then those around you
a great quote that i cant remember where its from is
"competition cause one to feel they must be better than, and hence cause others to feel less than, when the focus should be on doing well"

Competition is borne out of jealous/envy.

Learn to let go of that part of it and the competition will not need to happen. You will be able to enjoy what you have and work towards your goals without any animosity, bitterness or revenge.

"Getting ahead in life" is a judgment about what exist that usually include feel sad for ourselves and envy for what others have.

You are fortunate, if you look for evidence.

Yes...because you either have a competitive mindset or a creative mindset. The competitive mindset reflects the status quo, whereas the creative mindset is over the perimeter of the competitive mindset. Read, listen, observe, analyze, form your own judgment, be creative and be successful in life. Do you have a competitive mindset or a creative mindset?
