I suspect this started as a marketing ploy that has spread...originally 65 was the "rebate" age, but compitition brought the age down to 55....and our society is absolutely label proud...Senior Citizens, the Baby Boomers, The Me Generation, The X generation, ..... you name it, it has a label.
But I will have to say, this term, Senior Citizen, is so yesterday, trite, and bluntly, passe' . It describes nothing, and certainly does not describe our people of any age. What the hell IS a Senior Citizen? What the hell is "Middle Age?" Truthfully, at 66, I suspect I am more middle age than senior...I may well be self-delusional, but I doubt it. I see men who are 15 years my junior, in terrible shape, cannot run, barely walk...and this is Middle Age??? I see my father, 85, on step ladders, cleaning out gutters, mowing lawns, fixing his cars, and in general, running circles around 40 year olds..and this is OLD AGE???? I have a serious suggestion for our new name: People Of Power! I certainly think it is more appropriate than "Senior Citizen" which makes us all sound ready for a casket. I don't know about you, but I am anything BUT ready for one of those things. Talk to me after I cross the 100 mark, I will let you know what I want to be called, but I suspect I will still prefer, "People of Power. " And since we are all into acronyms, the POP group is just fine with me. We can then simply add a letter to indicate when we have moved onto a new age group, the "POOP Group" (By that time, anything we can still do will be considered "cute.")

These days we create new definitions of age. WE define it by the way we live our lives. Seventy today can be vibrant, alive, creative, loving, giving, and involved in life. Or it can be a couch potato scrunched down and bent over.
The term senior citizen was devised because way back then, people thought it impolite to call us old. Once the term "senior" implied that such a person would have respect. Being senior to someone on the job, Being a senior partner; but it soon became a bit condescending.
I think you are putting yourself down by what you wrote, unless it was tongue in cheek. I refer to myself as an older person. Older than anyone younger than me???????????????
It is all about how one lives, not what one is called.

As a young 80, I can't see why most of us should be called senior citizen until we are at least 90. Or maybe it should be 100 when our sex drive begins to recede.
