If you did volunteer work for two years could you put this down as your 2nd most recent job?

Volunteer work in a kitchen for two years; applying for a real job in a restaurant?

Would this not look embarrassing, or desperate for a job in an upscale restaurant?

It's not embarrassing to have been a volunteer.
Just as it is not an embarrassment to work for minimum wage.

I always encourage individual to list volunteer work on their applications and/or resumes!! Many times this volunteer work is far more demanding than some paid positions! Take the opportunity at the interview to explain the position and ALL that you did while you were doing it. Volunteerism is a very impressive attribute to most HR reps too! Make your donation of time and energy work for you!!!

I would think that volunteer work, if extensive (more than 5 hours/week) would be fine to list as experience, especially if you're going for a job in food service. It applies for a job. It was a job--but you donated your time.

This is definitely something you want to put on your application or resume. If the applications asks for other experience (besides work) I would put the information there.

Yes put it in your resume. People who voluntneer are often the best workers.

of course you can. it's the same as doing an internship. you can you that when you get to the "experience" on your resume.
