I'm just curious as to what people think the definition of racism is. I ask this because I so very often see racism brought up when I think it's inappropriate. Let's try to keep the answers as short as possible without using anecdotes or examples.

Racism is a belief or doctrine that differences in physical appearance between people (such as those upon which the concept of race is based) determine cultural or individual achievement, and usually involve the idea that one's own 'race' is superior.
That is what I believe right there. Straight from the books.

When people believe in "race" as opposed to cultural and social groups. After all there is only one race, color genes are not connected to any other genes that determine personality or ability. They will either try to "live the stereotype" or project it onto others. People who are 'racist' think there is some kind of inherent difference or defect with another person based on their skin color or geographic location. This is dangerous because the person chooses their behavior based on their own culture rather than their own moral reasoning, they feel they have no other choice.

racism is simply recognizing the substantive differences between races (primarily blaks and whites) and acting accordingly (avoiding blak areas at night is one example)
racism is NOT hate nor is it based solely on skin color, dark skin is not the primary way to identify a *******. racism is based on race, not "skin color",
