I was listening to CCTV News just this morning with my wife who ia a nurse and a Chinese too, (Sunday 22nd July 2007 at 6 34am )when the lady said Chinese nurses from Beijing went to Africa to work. She continued that out of every 10 (ten) patients over there, 8 (eight) had AIDS. She perceived Africa as a country. l wonder why many Chinese perceive Africa as a country and Asia as a continent. May l know if that is what they are taught in school? l will definately try to know where those nurses are working and also try to see if it is really true that out of every 10 patients in Arica ,8 have AIDS. Your facts will do me a big favour. Thank you in advance.

No, this is false. Although, Sub Saharan Africa does contain the bulk of the world's HIV/AIDS burden, the HIV/AIDS prevalence is only 6.1%.

Although, that still adds up to 24.5 million people!

And Africa is certainly not a country. However, due to a lot of Euro-Centricism and such, it's often not portrayed as a land of many different cultures and peoples. Especially because the country borders were drawn up by Europeans...

Africa consists of many countries, each one has it's own problems like any other country in the world. Within each country there are areas more deprived than others. Some African countries or areas within a country have higher rates of people living with HIV/AIDS than others. I don't think that there are any figures published that give an accurate insight into the number of people living with HIV/AIDS. My common sense leads me to believe that 8 out of 10 African people do not have HIV/AIDS.

Perhaps the hospital that the nurses were working at was in an African country that has one of the highest HIV/AIDS rates or perhaps people mainly only sought medical care at the hospital when severely ill and so 8 out of the 10 patients that they cared for had AIDS.

I hope that the following link is helpful. As I said briefly above, I don't believe that it is possible for any figures to be even close to accurate. http://www.avert.org/subaadults.htm

Patient statistics across Africa are not known, but the pecrentage will not be anything like that high.

In some hospitals, it may be the case. You must bear in mind that for most medical conditions in Africa, patients would spend little or no time in hospital. Last year, I believe that African Nations were allowed access to very much cheaper AIDS drugs. These drugs will allow many people to leave hospital in the near future.

Malaria, is still the biggest problem in Africa and the World.

The overall occurence of aids in Africa is approximately 6% and is 3rd behind Malaria and TB as the biggest killers but the only thing you hear about is AIDS.Malaria and TB are easilly treated but the cost of the drugs is prohibitive for most African families hence the high death rate especially among the children and elderly.Although AIDS is a problem and quite rightly is addressed I think the drug companies and governments should give as much priority to these two killers as well.Something which is sadly lacking at the moment.

Load of Rubbish.
Some countries in Africa have a higher rate than other but it does not, repeat not, average out at 8 out of every Ten.
malaria is a bigger killer in Africa than Aids.
As for the bright spark that said it is because they !! do not practise safe sex, well you really need to look at how else aids can be transmitted in poor countries.

Not that high but its touching 40% in some areas. Though you should remember that children under 14 are not usually included in the statistics.

Maybe she meant an African country. Its a big place.

What kind of information is that. You have not told us the number of patients. If there are only 10 patients, 8 with AIDS is good going for the whole of Africa.
