Being a child of the 70's, and not a fan of MTV, I didn't care for a lot of the mainstream rock of the 80's. The Glam "hair" bands where fun, though. Just don't try to look to deep into their music, the pretty people of 80's were pretty shallow.
Meat Loaf "bat out of hell" was fun, but circa 1979
ACDC "Back in Black" absolutely rocks, and still sells gold every year.
Foreigner was a great date album, as was anything Journey that had Steve Perry singing.
Rick Springfield did "Jessies Girl", great party tune
Bon Jovi's "wanted dead or alive" is a classic anthem
Poison actually did some good stuff, but "every rose" got all the play time.
Queen's Brian May was a phenomonal guitarist, and Freddy Mercury had an incredible voice, and Bohemiam Rhapsody was an instant classic (circa 1978). Then they started playing party toons. Fun music, very little substance.

I could go on and on, let me know if you want more information.
