It seems warning people of how dangerous unaccountability in government is falling on deaf ears again!!

When will we learn?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCarthyism

Once again our nation is being divided and still we quibble with each other instead of demanding answers and accountability!!

clk4cb: I quote..."There is no evidence that he (McCarthy)ever identified any subversive not already known to the authorities and the only consequence of his activities was to cause trouble and distress for alot of innocent people and discredit the activities of those genuinely concerned to make America safe."

MaCarthy was a side show.

Name one person McCarthy charged with being a communist, who wasn't...just one.

In the 1930s Fascism looked ready to take over the world and people were very worried about threats to freedom. McCarthy happened because Fascism had been defeated in WWII and people weren't that worried about it any more.

True story: In junior high school in the 1960s some of us took up a petition about a problem with our lockers. We were told by someone in the administration that we must NEVER sign any petition about ANYTHING because 20 years later we could be hauled up in front of a committee.

In the 1930s no one worried about signing petitions because they couldn't imagine McCarthy, or were so impoverished they didn't care. McCarthy came along and scared people with the threat of Communism, which he knew nothing about. Sort of like how Bush did with Islamic terrorism that he knew nothing about. The major difference is that McCarthy was never commander in chief. He ruined careers, but he couldn't set up an Abu Ghraib or a Gitmo, and when he tried giving orders to the military he destroyed himself.

As for your question, "when will we learn?" We're always learning and relearning the same lessons of history, each generation, unless it studies history, learns them again.

Number of Communists exposed by McCarthy: 0

Someone wants to know about a false claim by McCarthy?

From the link in my source:

"McCarthy insinuated that one Fred Fischer, a young lawyer at Hale & Dorr, harbored communist sympathies."

Sure there were real Communists, but McCarthy had nothing to do with finding them. He was the best thing they had going.

No, I probably would've believed it. In retrospect, having the Venona Papers proving he WAS RIGHT--we should never let our guard down.

"McCarthy's Reign of Terror" This is one of two or three big lies that the Left continues to spread about McCarthy. The average American did not fear McCarthy; in fact the Gallup Poll reported in 1954 that the Senator was fourth on its list of most ADMIRED men. The only people terrorized by McCarthy were those who had something subversive to hide and were afraid that they might be exposed.

Oh, there was a "reign of terror" in the early Fifties, but it was conducted AGAINST Joe not by him.

James Burnham, author of The Web of Subversion, a classic study of Communist penetration into the highest levels of the U.S. government, once reviewed the statistics of the so-called McCarthy terror:

Number of persons killed -- zero.

Number of persons wounded or injured -- zero.

Number of persons tortured -- zero.

Number of persons arrested w/o warrant -- zero.

Number of persons held or imprisoned w/o trial -- zero.

Number of persons evicted, exiled, or deported -- zero.

Number of persons deprived of due process -- zero.

Libs love to talk about the innocent people he destroyed. So please--name one. You may be able to come up with someone who came before some other committee, or Hollywood, or something which was never a focus of a McCarthy investigation." At the most, he publicly exposed about 160 persons, all of whom had significant records of collaboration with or support for Communists and/or Communist causes.

BTW-gave you a star to draw attn to your Q for my friends on the RIGHT!

When Hitler took over Germany, he took out the Communists first. They controlled a significant power bloc in the Reichstag until they were packed off to Dachau.

Hitler was appointed Chancellor because he promised the Krupps and the Thyssens that he would keep the labor unions in line, and he in fact abolished them, eventually.

A lot of Americans agreed with him, even past that point.

It's a new 1950s. McCarthy has come back covertly. It's really sad.

Edit: As a teacher whenever I see questions that I have asked that do not receive the answers I was looking for, I reexamine the question, not the question answers. You may want to reassess how you asked the question.

Some of us already know, but sadly, it seems that others will not learn until things get so 1984esque that only the very most obtuse can possibly keep themselves in denial. Let's hope that at least 75% wake up before it is too late. *sm*
