If possible turn the tops upside down and install a guide to keep the cut straight. If you cannot turn it over ... score the top with a razor knife install the guide and tape over the score line. Either way you'll need to use the proper blade for the task.

You already have a lot of suggestions but if you have limited skills and experience have a professional cut it. You will find its a lot cheaper than messing up a counter top.

Use a fine tooth circular saw blade , tape the edges where you are making the cut, and cut from the back side of countertop

For formica they make a special knife. You can get one at the hardware store for about $5. Using a straight edge you score the material with the knife and than break it. For finishing edges a trim router is used.

You can also use a jig saw with fine teeth and mask off the cut with tape, or use a router with a laminate bit in it

If it its a formica (laminate) top,turn the top over and cut it from the bottom side,SLOWLY with a circular saw.
