My stepfather, and his dad, did exactly that in 1947. I have their telescope now, it's a 6" Newtonian reflector.

They purchased the body tube and hardware, bought a blank glass and my grandfather ground it by hand(!!!) and then silvered it. I can't imagine how much effort that would have taken, and the care required to make it properly spherical.

I am afraid I can't be more precise than that, since I was minus 24 years old at the time!

I made one back in the 1960s. There are books on the subject. I used a book called "The Standard Handbook for Telescope Making", now out of print, but used ones can be had from Amazon or eBay or whatever. You can also google "how to make a telescope" and get some on line hits. But it is an old fashion thing to do and takes a lot of time and effort, so not many do it any more. In the old days, telescopes were expensive and you could save a lot of money making your own. Now there are very good and reasonably priced telescopes you can buy and it isn't really worth the effort to make your own.
