What you have is called a Tombac nickel due to what it is made of. nickel was an item needed in the war effort back in 1942. There are two types one has a beaver on it and it trends for .50 in grade very good to $2 in grade extra fine. The other type has a V on it no beaver and it trends for .30 in grade very good to .75 in grade extra fine. A trends price is an average of what a dealer sells the coin for. They pay 40 to 50 percent less.

Be careful evilstewie - the Canadian dollar is catching up!!! Chances are that your nickle has some copper in it. If it's been circulating since 1942 it's probably quite worn and worth only 5 cents! :(

It depends on the condition of the nickel. If there are any knicks on it, it will certainly reduce its value. At first, I didn't think that our nickels were any other colour than the silver that they are now, but I think we may have one in the basement and it is almost a brass colour as opposed to the copper of a penny.
