I have noticed than in people of color, their upper lip is dark most of the time. Why is this? I would think it would have something to do with melanoma, but I don't know.

I'd really appreciate an answer. Thank you very much.

I'm not sure if everyone understands my question.
My friend has a dark upper lip, and in people of darker color, they almost always have darker upper lips. The lighter you are, the lighter the pigmentation. The darker you are, the darker the pigmentation of the upper lip. I'm trying to understand why...
As in what chemical makes it that way...

Melasma (also called chloasma) is a condition in which areas of the skin become darker than the surrounding skin. Doctors call this hyperpigmentation. It typically occurs on the face, particularly the forehead, cheeks and upper lip. The dark patches often appear on both sides of the face in a nearly identical pattern. The darker-colored patches of skin can be any shade, from tan to deep brown. Rarely, these dark patches may appear on other sun-exposed areas of the body.

The word is "melanin", which is skin pigment.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer.

It is probably an site of higher melanin or it could just be a shadow between their lip and nose.

No its not because of shaving. I believe mostly it is because of the high concentration of melanoma. It could be a birth defect or the person could just need to scrub in the shower a bit more thoroughly
