When I say ideas I mean theories because what they think is as interesting as what their actually seeing. New discoveries create new ideas.

Saturn now has 60 known moons and a new ring discovered by the Cassini Mission. The rings have atmosphere. One of the moons, Enceladus is 99.9% water with a molten rock core which causes water and ice volcanoes to erupt under pressure along fissure lines. It may be similar to earth in its infancy which makes it interesting to study. A big question is if it was born during the Big Bang why has it not matured beyond this stage? If not how did it get there? It has simple organic molecules and the basics of life.

The newest idea about astronomy and cosmology is that the application of Einstein's cosmological constant has become real.As a result they have discovered and theorized about dark matter and its Energy.
However the New kid on the Block is String Theory.
So there is a conflicting idea between dark energy and string energy. It becomes a comparative theory Relativity or String Theory.
If those theories are proven wrong ,then we would have to look for another theory.

One of the hot new areas in astronomy is extrasolar planets. Planets orbiting other stars. We always assumed they existed, but until a few years ago we had no observational evidence for them. Now we do and there are numerous projects underway, some of them satellite based, to find an Earth like planet orbiting another star. So far, all the extrasolar planets found are not like Earth at all.

Just last week they announced the discovery of water vapour in the atmosphere of an extrasolar planet for the first time. They also just found Saturn's 60th moon, which is temporarily named "Frank". (I'm not joking!)
