Because prepackaged food has a generally high sugar and fat content plus the chemicals. But not the nutritional values needed to properly quench hunger and energize the body for the time required so snacking results.
Not to mention the introduction of video games and computers I would bet the USA has one of the highest concentrations of both. So instead or getting healthy exercise by doing out door activities. Running ,swimming, walking,

You must know an active handful of people. Most people in this country work all day and sit on their butt in an office or at a desk. We eat fast food because it is cheap and easy. Also, we eat three meals a day and not everyone does that. The accessibility to food in this country is insane. EVERYONE has food. We eat socially, we have food themed holidays (thanksgiving). People elsewhere only eat to survive. Americans like lard and so we fill our bodies with it.

The movie "Supersize Me" lays it out. Sizes of meals have increased a lot. People are eating beyond feeling full, they are not doing very much exercise or hard work any more, almost no one walks or rides a bike, they ride in cars. It is as unhealthy as it is unattractive. I read about a company that started out very small...ironically enough...making clothes for fat children, and there are so many fat children that the company is ...how to put it...living off the fat of the land. The answer is mirrors. People need to look at themselves and realize how gross, how truly ugly and unattractive they are, they need to be shamed into putting down that cheeseburger and picking up a bar bell.

It's the food we buy and the lifestyle we lead.
All the processeed food we buy (fast food, microwave dinners, three minute meals) all this cheap food is the worst food we could eat with all the chemicals and such they put in it.
Nowadays you have to be well off to be healthy as eating healthy is more expensive.
Also, they sell everything in portions larger than one serving. "Spagettio's" cans say right on the side that they are intended for 2 servings but I always heat them up and eat them in one. Same with other 'instant' food.

Food advertisements everywhere engraving a want for unhealthy foods combined with more products that offer ease in exchange for some physical work. I blame the media. There are also so many options for loosing such weight. Everything is corrupt and wrong. Ahh!

Fast food places, the chemicals in our food, food that is served on a regular basis, people just don't know that eating healthier is better than eating something that's yummy.
Also, the average "American", when they have dinner, have something full of fat or sodium, or something that is not fresh. Then, after that, they have a sugary dessert.

Well I think its the abundance of cheap fatty foods and not enough hard labor to be honest.
At least that was the case with me. It's kind of strange that here you have to pretty much work hard to NOT gain the weight.
I sponsor a few kids with World Vision. I wish I could just send people who need food the abundance we have here that it is so easily and readily available.

It's because of our fast paced lives. Go to Italy and you won't see huge mega markets and fast food around every corner. You'll see fresh food markets. Food is fresh, non-processed, and cooked with care. Americans eat way too much sodium and preservatives. We're also in such a rush, we don't take the time to cook healthy meals, we just get what's fast--which usually equals unhealthy.

Luxury is ridiculously overvalued by many Americans, and we have the money to pay for it. Also trash food, loaded with salt, fat, and sugar, is conveniently available everywhere here while healthier alternatives often are nowhere to be found.
