The French were very influential. Not so much through diplomacy but by example.

I believe this question deserves more of an answer. The revolutionary War and the Civil war had as factors in them something Americans don't often dwell on, and that is the trade practices between the ruling merchant class and Europe.
By the time of the Revolutionary War, the northeast was extremely wealthy, because of trade with Europe. The British
Crown, by imposing it's steep taxes, was cashing in on this, and those taxes were hampering trade with the rest of Europe. The French and the Hessians recognized that a free America would be a more beneficial trading partner, and so they sided militarily with us. Simultaneously, their merchant classes limited trade with Britain in a punitive fashion, to encourage the separation of the colonies from the Crown.
Later, in the Civil war, the same factor was present. By then,
the wealthy northeast had all but cornered trade to its European markets... and again there were forces in Europe that helped the south to secede. Again, it would have been much to the benefit of these European markets to trade directly with the American south
But in both wars, it was the military influence, including embargos, that decided the outcome.
