He never claimed he invented it, he claimed he "created" it.
Transcript: Vice President Gore on CNN's 'Late Edition'
BLITZER: I want to get to some of the substance of domestic and international issues in a minute, but let's just wrap up a little bit of the politics right now.
Why should Democrats, looking at the Democratic nomination process, support you instead of Bill Bradley, a friend of yours, a former colleague in the Senate? What do you have to bring to this that he doesn't necessarily bring to this process?
GORE: Well, I will be offering -- I'll be offering my vision when my campaign begins. And it will be comprehensive and sweeping. And I hope that it will be compelling enough to draw people toward it. I feel that it will be.
But it will emerge from my dialogue with the American people. I've traveled to every part of this country during the last six years. During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in CREATING THE INTERNET. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system.

Al Gore DID claim to have INVENTED the internet.
If you recall, when he was the VP..he was a huge, huge proponent of the capabilites that the internet could provide. At the time, the mainstream internet as we know it was really still in its infancy..like I doubt Microsoft had even made internet explorer yet. So yes, he did realize the potential of the internet, and he was a big proponent of having it in classrooms all across the USA.
a few years later, during a news conference or speech or somehing, he did claim to have INVENTED the internet.
It was probably just a poor choice of words. Certainly he was a huge influence in getting the internet's capabilities more mainstream and recognized as an important tool. He probably did INVENT (TO A VERY SMALL DEGREE)public awareness of the internet.
The internet of course has been around for a while, but not in its current form. Now we use graphical interfaces. Previously, the internet was unix based, test only, accessed using 2400 baud modems (1 MEG takes an hour to download). It was primarily used by universities prior ro 1990.

It was a miss quote from Bush who was refrencing Al Gores interveiw....it was all debunked. But no one cared for what was really said.
In recent days, major newspapers and media personalities have revived the myth that, during his presidential run, former Vice President Al Gore claimed he "invented" the Internet. Although these media outlets persist in repeating or alluding to it, this falsehood has long since been debunked. Gore did not say he "invented" the Internet. In the March 9, 1999, interview on CNN's Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer that gave rise to the myth, Gore actually said: "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet."

The internet came about because of military communications needs in the field. Gore was a major player in promoting and acquiring the funding to create the program for the military. He didn't create the internet but he did acknowledge the non-military benefits of the program once it was developed.

I don't know the source but I did see an interview when he was running for pres. - he stated that he invented it- what he did actually do - he and Clinton supported a thing called the information super highway - even got congress to invest a lot of money into it, that same information super highway is now called the internet.
