Dear ^v^. I'd like to add some comment and correct. You say most of the time korea was an independent state. Yes it was "a state", not "an independent country".
Actually Korea had been under tribute system of China for nearly thousand years in total until "Treaty of Shimonoseki" in 1895.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Shimonoseki#Treaty_terms
China didn't allow them to use their own letters, and there was no emperor. Cos their emperor had to be the emperor of China under Sinocentrism.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ja/7/79/Tenka_Han.png
But Japan stopped to send envoy to China for receiving "Ce-feng" around 7th century. It was ended in the in the Sui Dynasty of China. That is why Japan holds emperor more than thousand years.
Today Koreans vary. Mainly they are in Korean peninsula. But there are also Korean ppl in China and Russia. They are little bit different from the ppl in the peninsula.
Japanese lives in Japan basically. They are categorized one individual race(ppl) today.
However, Northern part of Japan was connected to Asian continent in the ancient time and it is said lots of ppl had moved from there.
In their DNA, you can find similarity with Mongolians, Chinese, Russians and the ppl in the southern pacific ocean.

The pronunciation of Fujian language in China still exist in Japanese.
Like Si-kai(world), Liao-kai(understand), chi, ni, san..(1,2,3....)

Let me answer this question! Well I am a chinese so please collect my mistake if I am wrong! As most of the information I know is based on chinese history books. Long long time ago China used to be the strongest country in Asia. China has land, resourses etc. Most important thing was that china was the first country in asia to have written lanuage.
Long long long time ago china wasn't just 1 country. Until 6000 years ago it become down to one main power up in the north and some small usless pwer down in the south. At that time the major power's goverment order to build the great wall as well as make up a written lanuage which can use thorwout china (northen china at the time). At this time other wriiten lanuage in china is mostly drawing pictures to represent some meaning. At this point is when the chinese written history started.
At that time some northern part of korea is part of the major power of china but some area down in the south was under some small power control just like in southern china. This is why korea has been using the chinese written lanuage for thausands of years. Then later on in the history china has been have lots of changes some new powers grown and some taken over by the others from time to time. But anyway the main power was always up in the north. Most of the time korea was an independant state. (but heavily relay on China). China did make korea and japan to pay money, food and women for just using the chinese written lanuage. (I will explan about japan a little later.)
Until about 600 years ago korea was thinking that keep paying china for the right to use someone's lanuage is just an stupid idea so he designed the mordern korean lanuage. (mordern korean lanuage allows readers to pronouns words while chinese lanuage can't)
Japan:
According to chinese history. Japan was an island where only a few people lived there and they didn't have written lanuage at that time (6000 years ago). There was a group of people who severed in the chinese army told a story to the king that there is a kind of food which can make human never die. And the stupid king orded them to go to the island of japan to get them back to the king. Well of coz there wasn't such food and those people took some money and bring along with their family to go to japan to start their new lives. The king relized that they never return to china so he order some more people to go to japan to find them and bring them back. But then those people again gone to japan and stayed there as in stouth japan the weather was alot better than in china.
It would be such a long long story to keep telling but in short that is why japan and korea used chinese lanuage. Japan still using chinese words nowadays.
japan and korea's culture are mostly from china e.g. chopstick.
Hope my answer would give you a better knowelage on asian history!

Some.
China is not only made up of Han Chinese. There are 56 ethnic groups in there
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_groups_in_China
Korean in China
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_Koreans_in_China
That is not a stupid question. It has a long history background.
*Korea
The name "Korea" derives from the Goryeo(고려) period of Korean history, which in turn referred to the ancient kingdom of Goguryeo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Three_Kingdoms_of_Korea_Map.png
The Three Kingdoms of Korea (Goguryeo, Silla, and Baekje) dominated the peninsula and parts of Manchuria during the early Common Era. They competed with each other both economically and militarily. Goguryeo united Buyeo, Okjeo, Dongye and other states in the former Gojoseon territory, in addition to destroying the last Chinese commandery. Goguryeo was the most dominant power, but was at constant war with the Sui and Tang dynasties of China. Founded around today's Seoul, the southwestern kingdom Baekje expanded far beyond Pyongyang during the peak of its powers in the 4th century. Although later records claim that Silla, in the southeast, was the oldest of the three kingdoms, it is now believed to have been the last kingdom to develop. (Of course, many parts of Korea was colonization by China for a long time. It could be either under ruling or force retributions. On the other hand, China provided military protection for them- e.g. prevent invasion from Japan )
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korea
And geographically it is very close to China as well. Thereby, there are many people still speak Korean in Manchuria, China. Many of them are the decedents of Goryeo. Korean has borrowed much vocabulary from the genetically unrelated Chinese or created vocabulary on Chinese models.
Japan
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Japan
Many believe and DNA analysis suggests that the Ainu, an indigenous people found mostly today on the northern island of Hokkaidō, but previously had lived on Honshū, and potentially other groups, as mentioned in the Kojiki, such as the tsuchi-gumo (English: dirt spiders), are descended from the Jōmon and thus represent descendants of the first inhabitants of Japan. Also, entire wood dwellings (that normally would rot away) have been dug up in northern Japan that were preserved in ice, dated back to before 8000 BC (radio-carbon dating).
The Yayoi period, starting around the third century BC, introduced new practices, such as wet-rice farming, iron and bronze-making and a new style of pottery, brought by migrants from China or Korea. With the development of Yayoi culture, a predominantly agricultural society emerged in Japan.
The Japanese first appear in written history in China’s Book of Han. According to the Chinese Records of the Three Kingdoms, the most powerful kingdom on the archipelago during the third century was called Yamataikoku.
Japan was first introduced to Buddhism from Korea, but the subsequent development of Japanese Buddhism and Buddhist sculptures were primarily influenced by China. Despite early resistance, Buddhism was promoted by the ruling class and eventually gained growing acceptance since the Asuka period.
http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~dee/ANCJAPAN/ANJAPAN1.HTM
The first involved the settlement of Japan by a group of peoples from the Korean peninsula in the third century BC. Overnight they transformed the stone-age culture of Japan into an agricultural and metal-working culture. These early immigrants are ultimately the origin of Japanese language and culture.
The areas of Japan which have shown the most cultural change are those, as you might imagine, that are closest to the mainland of Asia. The southern island of Kyushu and the southwestern peninsula of Honshu lie close to the Korean peninsula. It is in this region that the Japanese first immigrated into Japan in the third century BC, and it is in this region that the first state in Japan was established: the Yamato State on the Yamato peninsula (the southwesternmost peninsula on Honshu)
