I'm getting cows and I plan to train them as calves. I'll do halter lessons and try to do longe line lessons. Is it possible to ride cows? Do they like it? I was thinking of going bareback, but wouldn't their extremely boney backs hurt? I have three horse saddles, one little kid saddle and the others are much bigger. If I just use a regular saddle pad would it hurt their backs? Should I layer them? I obviously won't use a bit, probably just a halter and spare reins. I realize that cows are harder to train than horses and probably don't respond as well. I'll try my best!! Help is appreciated!

If you will have those cows for milk you want them to stay contented for maximum yield and minimum stress. I think if you jump on their bony backs to get your jollies they are not going to be very happy and will be unproductive and short-lived. I also think they are going to kick and try to hook you with their horns (if not de-horned).

It depends on how the cow and how it is raised.

Some are naturally more high strung than others, and will buck. Some are pretty laid back, and will let you ride.

If you raise the cow, are always around it, treating it like a pet, getting on it for a ride, then of course, it's gonna be use to it, and allow you to ride it.

Our school mascot was a HUGE bull. He went to all our football games, and with all the noise, my Agricultrue Teachers son (about 5 years old) rode him around the football field at half time!
We use to jump on him out in the pasture and go for a ride, he loved it!

Remember, a cow is different from a horse...Your not gonna throw a saddle on the cow, and take off running. Respect the animal and it's limitations....Good luck to you and your cattle!

yea go for it!! ive asked that on her and everyone gave me negative answeres.

if you were to use a saddle you would have to get one coustom made i think.. but it depends what breed of cow u get. you could use a bareback pad. its just like a grippy saddle pad with a girth. but i would put another oad under it if it has a boney back. just be careful becuase there kinda clumbsy lol.

Why on gods green earth do you want to ride a cow?
Or spend the time training a cow to lunge?
I can see offering fitting & showmanship lessons to younger 4H participants who may want to move into showing Cows/Calves.
