It's a trite phrase, character description or concept idea, something that has been used so much the novelty has worn off.

Examples are "two wrongs don't make a right," "forgive and forget," "laughing my a** off," and many others. Also having New York cabbies be loud and uncouth, having acountants wear coke-bottle glasses and carry pocket calculators, and having blonde female characters to be dumb as ever.

A Cliche is an over-used phrase or expression. “Happy as a clam” or “eyes like a hawk” are examples of clichés.
