no it messes you up. write all of the possibilities really tiny in the corner of the box. then you can eliminate numbers and eventually find the answer

I've seen a Web site where brutally hard Sudoku puzzles were posted. The puzzles were all thought to require "bifurcation" (a fancy word for guessing), but, in fact, logical methods were eventually found to solve every one of them.

Now, that's not to say the logic can't get very complicated, but the fact is, I don't believe any puzzles have been found that require guessing. Also, the puzzles that are rated as "diabolical" in your Sunday newspaper are nowhere near as hard as the really tough ones. Solving the harder puzzles in your newspaper, to be frank, just requires knowing some of the more advanced tricks, and to learn those tricks, just do a little research -- there are plenty of Web sites describing them, and even some downloadable computer programs that will walk you through a solution one step at a time, giving the logic behind each step.

No guessing. But when I get stuck near the end, I do use "IF-THEN" logic. I find a square that can only be one of two numbers. I play with one choice (not hardly a guess) and see how far it goes without a logic error. This usually triggers a good idea for a next move.

Nah try to avoid guessing...because it can screw the rest of the numbers up.
Use logic.

Sorry, but had to throw this in. In response to the answer above, "bifurcation" is when two things come together into one. The word is typically used to describe the point in a fingerprint where two ridges come together.

KGuessing is too messy, because you then have to erase your guess, but you also need to remember everything you put down based on that guess.
