I have twice cleared the mushrooms from the pot but as the mushroom is poisonous , does that make the lemons unsafe to eat.?

Possibly you're putting in too much water. Mushrooms grow from spores. You might try repotting the plant in new soil after soaking the plant in a bucket of water for several hours.

I doubt that mushrooms or toadstools will effect any lemons you get from your tree. However, I doubt that you'll be getting many from your tree unless it's a mature tree, gets plenty of light and is well fed.

If your planting soil is infected, you need to repot with new, sterile soil or you may never get rid of the mushrooms... Poisonous?!?! Don't have a clue. Contact a good nursery near you or call your county Extension service to find out....

Leucocoprinus birnbaumii page at http://www.mushroomexpert.com/leucocoprinus_birnbaumii.html
"Leucocoprinus birnbaumii won't hurt you, unless you eat it. It won't hurt your plant. It won't hurt your pets or your children, unless they eat it. There is no getting rid of it, short of replacing all the soil in your planter (and even then it might reappear)."
