Two top choices in your price range would be the Dell 1520 and the HP 6500. Both can be customized and offer the best value.

I'd focus more on laptop features and your computing needs than the price. If you only plan on browsing the web, e-mail, text messaging, music, and running a word processor ... these are all applications that can be done on a $350 Pentium 3 laptop. If you are a power user and intend on playing games on the laptop then you need to check out the minimum system requirements for the games you wish to run to figure out the appropriate hardware and software.
Next figure out the features you desire ... size, weight, battery life, display size, read-write capability, etc.
The top five companies that make millions of laptops each year are: HP, Dell, Acer, Lenovo (IBM) and Toshiba. I would pick a couple models from a couple of these vendors that meet your feature set in your price range and compare them to figure out which one would best meet your needs.

macbooks. They're fast, big hd's, 1-2 gb of ram (1 comes standard), no viruses, and they look sweet.
