That's very possibly the source of the noise. Before replacing it though, take the filter apart and make sure the impeller ( the little spinning part that moves the water) is clean and free of materials in the hole it sits down in. Carefully reassemble the filter and if it still makes a loud noise, I would recommend replacing the impeller.

Most often this is caused by a lose impeller, or sand or gravel in the impeller.

Shut off the filter and take out the intake tube. At the bottom of the filter will be the impeller. You can take this out and clean it. Also check to make sure that the rubber ends are both intact and not worn. Sometimes these wear and can cause a vibration in the impeller.

While it is out make sure there is nothing in the whole at the bottom of the filter where the impeller sits.

Now put it all back together and fill the filter box with water from the tank. Turn the filter back on and see if the noise is gone. If it isn't then you should ask your local fish store to order you a new impeller. It shouldn't cost you more than around $10.

The propeller (the part that spins) may have a piecie of gravel or somthing in it. Turn it off and open it. And if there is nothing in it , I would get a new propeller or buy a new filter.
