I suggest that you use the ship's tours because Jamaica is not that safe for anyone to go off on their own. There have been reports by travel agents of people running rogue taxis and taking people out and one price and then demanding more money for the return trip. Just a month or so ago a tour from a Carnival ship was robbed at gun point while on a tour by men who run up out of the bushes. The bandits were eventually caught but still, be forewarned.

I have been to many Caribbean islands, including Jamaica and would never do a tour on that island on my own. Agents will tell you that if you go there to stay not to go off the hotel property to get a taxi or our.

It's always safer to use the ships excursions, especially in Jamaica. I went on the gardens/museum tour and then to Dunn's River Falls...it was really cool. They also took us to a small shopping area that was blocked off from the locals and had guards standing at the entrance (that's how agressive the locals are trying to approach you and sell you stuff). Have fun though, its a beautiful place.
