Currently 13 is considered to be an unlucky number. However, I am told it used to be--and in some earth-worshiping, i.e., pagan, religions still is--a lucky and magical number. Consequently there were 13 months and 13 zodiac signs (the Gemini twins had separate identities). Knowing how Christianity and other god-as-a-man-based religions were prone to say that what the pagans (Earth-and-god-as-a-woman) considered good was bad, I wonder if this was the case with the number 13. And why was 13 singled out of an infinity of numbers in the first place? Also, if the number 13 is so bad, why is it reflected so many times on the U.S. $1 bill-- 13 levels in the pyramid, 13 stars, 13 arrows, 13 stripes, 13 leaves, and 13 olives? Is it because of the original 13 colonies?

. Friday the 13th has been considered an unlucky day since the 1800s, as a combination between an unlucky day, Friday, and the number 13. Another theory as to why the date and number 13 is considered unlucky is that, on the day of Friday the 13th after the final Crusade the pope had sent out men to capture and burn alive the last 13 Templar knights in order to put an end to the Crusades. Also not all people think its unlucky some its a lucky number hope this helps

The truth of the matter is that there's no universally- accepted origin of 13 being unlucky in Western culture. One possible explanation is that Jesus had 12 apostles and so the 13th member of the group was Judas (and Jesus was killed on a Friday too). Another potential explanation is that 12 is a highly divisible number, so if there's 13 people who are to group up in groups of 2, 3, 4, or 6, the 13th person's unlucky enough to be left out.

It's not unlucky everywhere. Apparently, Friday the 13th is a lucky day in Italy, not one where you have to watch out for bad things.

Summerian math makes 13 hard to get at, or so I've been told.
Technically NASA is not a believer in that superstion, but after Apollo 13 strangely there have been not more 13s. (Oddly they start renaming programs or ships after 12

it's mostly religion based, many things come in 12, but not 13 in Judeo-Christianity . Christianity versus paganism. Well, 12 is the perfect number when it comes to simple number theory. 13 would be one then the perfect number, ie. bad luck.

wow..no one got this one right..
except for one person who said it started in the middle ages
it was the knights Templar that where 13 started to be seen as unlucky.
it was associated with friday which was the day they were
murdered in a preempted plan by some king of that time
because he feared their power and influence..
