The stress coat didn't cause the sudden high pH unless something is either wrong with the stress coat or some really weird and funky chemical reaction is going on in the tank. Knowing more details about the tank, such as size, filtration, substrate and the like would help. So would knowing the KH and GH of the tank.

Was this at the same time as a water change or within a day of a water change? If so check the pH of your tap water, it may be really high.

To be honest, that much change happened over the course of a day or more or your fish would most likely have died. Also, the first thing that came to my mind was a pH "bounce" When you said you had it at 7.4 it makes me think you have been adjusting the pH with some type of additive, if that is the case please include that in the additional information and we can figure out what is going on in your tank.

Most likely, no. Assuming, that you followed the directions, and added the proper amount. Usually, when adding water conditioners, excess will cause a drop in pH.

Also, how did your pH vary 8.4 - 8.8? Was this based on 2 tests? If so, possibly your original reading was incorrect.

Your pH did not go through the roof. If the increase was to pH 10, that would be through the roof.

I would check your pH again.

Thats odd i use this product too when i change the water and i never had this problem it must be the testing kit you used try double checking it when its at 7 again and and when you add this product while changing the water if same reading it must be the water and not the conditioner,

And the stress coat suppose to reduce the pH.

Why did you add stress coat? I normally don't add anything unless I make a water change or add water to top off the tank between water changes.

It may well have been, I dont suggest adding chemicals in the future.
