I got my first offense the other day, what should i expect and what should i do?

It was STUPID but some friends and i thought it would be exciting to go shoplifting. I've never been in any kind of trouble with the law ( still only 16)

Can anyone tell me whats going to happen?
Maybe some advice on what i can do?
(at 16, cant really afford a lawyer)

what was the total on the item(s) stolen?
Relax, you will get into some trouble, but it wont go on your permanent record! for being, 16, probably a fine,thats it!

Being your 1st offense, you'll probably just get probation, make restitution (pay for the items) or maybe some community service. A lawyer will be appointed to you since you can't afford one.

Let the court know that you've learned your lesson and you won't do it again

I hope you have learned your lesson. Obtaining "things" is much more rewarding when you earn the money to pay for them yourself.

If you cannot afford a lawyer, one will be appointed for you. You will probably be told that your best bet is to plead either guilty or no contest and take your punishment. If you were caught "red handed" or, or in the act, you will have very little defense. You will probably get some kind of probation and will have to pay restitution if whatever you took was not returned.

If your lucky they will treat you as a young offender and just give you a slap on the wrist because it is a first offense.

However, you now have a permanent criminal record and it will stay with you for the rest of your life and may very well affect any chances you have for a good job.

Just, hope that they seal your records as a minor which they do in some places and don't do it again.
