How do you read a thermometer strip? Does the brightest color indicate the present temperature? My thermometer is presently orange, yellow, green, and navy at all different temperatures.

Those are both difficult to read properly as well as frequently inaccurate. I would strongly suggest you pick up a floating still thermometer.

the number that shows up green is the temp reading, however, i agree with the other person that those type of thermometers are not that accurate. You're better off getting a thermometer that sticks to the inside with a suction cup.

Green is the temp it is, the yellow and orange is the temp it was and navy is the temp it will be soon, I don't know why they do this, but mine do that all the time and I basically only pay attention to the green one
