You can tell a blueberry is ripe by tugging gently, if it comes off easily it is ripe. So the berry pickers only pick the ripe ones which do not retain their stems.

Chances are the berries we so much enjoy were collected by immigrants who so many unfairly despise.

Picking blueberries does not involve cutting stems. Each is picked by hand, like strawberries and raspberries

The stem will help keep the berry fresh until you're ready to use it. Just pinch the stem at the base and it should come right off, it penetrates the berry such a tiny bit.
