GREAT engine! One of the better ones GM has made, IF it is well maintained!

I have a cherry 98 S-10 red extended four wheel driver with 26,000 actual miles. The only problem I've had was an oil cooler line leaked and needed replacement after 10 years of use. The Vortec 262 cubic inch (4.3 liter) gets nearly 24 mpg. on trips with 3.73 gears. I've bitten a few Ford turbo diesels with no problem. Chevrolet has some great replacement cylinder heads, roller camshafts and intake manifolds that will add to the fun.
The only way it'll ever leave me is from my dead hands. I've changed the front sway bar by stealing a larger diameter one from a Blazer at a local bone yard.

Terrific; it's basically a 350 missing 2 slugs so what would you expect. I bought one, a 96 K1500 ext cab 4x4 with 50k drove it to 113k sold it to my sister who sold it to my dad at 167k then he sold it to my b rother in law at 199999.7 over a year ago. The only thing ever done to the motor was a new fan clutch and a w,ater pump followed shortly there after, dominoe effect, I took a couple clutches out of it being a bonehead with too heavy of loads but I could never hurt that motor, even with a 2500 pound electric motor that actually bottomed me out so bad the echo cans on the dual exhaust I put on got crushed, and yes that was one load that claimed a slave cylinder.

I had one in an 90 Chevy S-10 and it was a kick butt engine except that I had to replace head gaskets on it around 50,000 miles but other than that it was a strong engine.

4.3 vortec is a good engine, i preferred the 4.3 before the vortec but neverthe less it is a good engine.

I had one, and I know 6 or 7 people that have them, and three of them suffered the same fate: a rod knock caused by a spun bearing. Mine didn't blow up, but I have seen enough of them fail to not recommend this engine to anybody.

I wish my truck had one, I think I am going to trade in my Ford Ranger for a Chevy. Stuck with a pathetic 3.0 and I hate it.
