Yes, it could run on a Pentium 4 CPU, but I wouldn't reccomend it. Upgrading to Vista with a Pentium D is even pushing it. I reccomend you upgrade your CPU before upgrading your OS to Vista. I also reccomend at least 2Gigabytes of RAM. Also, consider a new video card. The ATI Radeon X1300 is the lowest version I would reccomend.
These three upgrades will make a huge difference in your Vista experiance. Vista has far too many requirements, but many people still say that they just love the new OS. If you wish to get the most from Vista, by all means first upgrade these three critical hardware components. CPU is the heart of your computer and it determines how well all other components run. Memory determines how fast your programs will run, and how many you can run at one time. Your video card determines your visual experiance, and Vista has a lot of pop if you have the right hardware. Why get Vista if you can't get the most out of it?
Now, CPUs require certain types of memory. CPUs also may work better with one video card manufacturer than another. I am building a system to house my Vista Ultimate and my motherboard and CPU is built for best compatibility with the ATI line of cards, which is now manufactured by AMD. AMD bought ATI a couple of years ago.
I have checked into NVidia and ATI cards and NVidia cards are more for gamers. While ATI also has great cards for gamers it is not all about games like NVidea G-Force are. Now, before somebody chops off my head, G-Force is good for other video functions than just games too, but you all have to admit that games is this companies focus. Just go to the website and you will see in all the cards descriptions mention of games.
I also reccomend you put in a new HDD. 80GB is just not large enough anymore to support all the multimedia files we create, download etc. It is simple to change out a HDD, just back up your data, pop in the new HDD, load Vista, then copy you data back to the new drive. If you wish you can put the old disk in as slave or secondary drive depending on wether it is SATA of PATA. SATA doesn't use slave attachments. All SATA HDDs use primary SATA hookups.
You could then use the old drive for backup purposes, which is always a plus with computers.
Good luck and much fun with your Vista OS. Oh, sorry, if you purchased Vista upgrade you are sort of stuck keeping your 80 Gigabyte HDD as the Primary drive as the upgrade must go over your old Windows XP OS. If you haven't yet opened the package, consider taking it back and purchase the full copy of Vista. However, if you have your WinXP OS CD, you still could move the old drive, install the WinXP OS on the new drive, then do the upgrade and then add back the old drive as a secondary drive for backup or data storage.
p.s. some people complain about Vista because the have less or at the "reccomended" hardware specifications. Always go with more than the lowest reccomendations if you wish to have the best experiance with Vista. There is simply no getting around the fact that Vista requires more hardware resources than Windows XP, but once you have the proper hardware it is a great OS. If these people who complain Vista is slow just added more RAM they would see a huge increase in speed. Also, if they upgraded over a lower grade CPU, such as a Pentium 4, the experiance is going to less than they hoped for or expected. It is just the facts.

I think that your computer can run Windows Vista, I've checked the official hardware requirements at http://www.microsoft.com and they mentioned that it requires a 32-bit processor (recommended). You might want to upgrade your memory though. 512 MB is fine but you might want to bump that up to 1 GB. Vista will slow to a grinding halt if has 512 MB or lower RAM. In any case I'm that Pentium 4 will run vista without any problems.

if i was you i would buy another hard drive to put it on , and keep your xp one, if you have any problems you can then put that back in and still have all your data , if you then do not like vista you can format the disk and use it as a 2nd hard-drive, if you know some one with a vista disk borrow a copy , and install that you will have a 30 trial so it will not cost you any thing hope this has been helpful to you Alec

bill gates designed vista to make pent 4 and below processors obselete. i seen people on here complaining about vista being slow as molasses in winter on a core duo computer. so i'm gonna advise you to stay with xp. the other bad thing about vista i see all the time is it's incompatablity with the high end games.
stay with xp and enjoy the speed of it with xp or better yet go to one of the linux distros and watch that pent 4 cook. i have a computer with about the same specs as yours and i have ubuntu linux on it. and i love the speed i get.
