that you get when you check out at the grocery store, depart. store, etc? Seems more often that not, the cashier makes a comment about what I'm buying. Yesterday is was 'do you need dishes or something?' because I was buying dishes for someone who needed them.

it is highly inappropriate for the cashier to comment on your purchases. i hope you didn't reply, because s/he doesn't deserve an answer, or, you can always use the famous Ann Landers question; "Now, why do you ask that?" it covers so many situations. Chances are, s/he will state the obvious, and you can counter with,"well, what do you think?" maybe they're attracted to you and trying to pry into your life, or start up a conversation, but a checkout line is for purchasing items, not "checking out" people. this is just one small symptom of the breakdown of manners in this country. kids laugh at us for being "old fashioned", but this is one fashion i truly wish would come back.

I've never encountered that. Maybe she was just trying to make conversation that in my opinion was in poor taste.

Yes, that's rude; they shouldn't make assumptions or any such comments.
