President Wilson won reelection with a promise to keep the U.S. out of World War I. Our position was neutral but we were sympathetic to Great Britain and the Allied cause. We were more susceptible to British propaganda because of a common language. Also the German U-Boats sank ships indiscriminately. When they sank the Lusitania there were Americans aboad. But there were also armaments aboard. The Germans knew that we were smuggling arms to Britain. We were violating our own neutrality. What got us into the war however was the "Zimmerman Telegram" which promised to return to Mexico land that they had lost to us if they joined Germany in the war against the U.S. and they won. I hope that this has been a help to you.

We wanted to stay neutral because it was a Western Power war but Germany sank our ships that wanted to bring England war goods. So then we entered.

Germany sank the US ships namely the Luisitiana. Yet, we were secretly giving Britain war supplies. At the contrary, civilians were on board.
