We have 5 goldfish, all different species. One of our fish was all gold when we bought him but he now has black edges to his fins and tail. Is he just maturing and developing this colour or is it an infection or disease?

We do a 25% change every week. the ph has been about 7.5 but haven't checked the ammonia.

Frankly it could be either one. there are several causes of black edging on there fins including healing from recent damage, healing from ammonia burns, an active infection or simply genetics. I would suggest you continue to watch him carefully and note any change in the shape of his fins, watch for any other dark areas forming on him and also watch his eating and swimming habits.

Changes in the shape or size of his fins, especially along the areas that are black could also indicate disease. A lack of eating or a sudden lack of activity would also not be good news. If you see any of these things, post another question and if at all possible include a link to a photo of the fish and we can go from there. On the other hand if you don't see these red flags within the next week you can relax and know it's not disease related.

It sounds like ammonia poisioing/burning. Have you tested your water lately? How big is the tank?, do a 25% water change just now.

Addition:
Well there is too much ammoniaa still in the water, do 2 x 25 water changes a week, and if the ammonia is still high to 2 x 50% a week.
